going 3-0-1 to win the gold medal.
In
their first game against Lincoln
Park Michigan,
centre Nicole Tizzard led the way, scoring 4 goals in a 5-1 victory. Kayley Gilmour had the other Cambridge tally with
assists coming from Rebecca Galvao (2), Alexis Gallant, Laura Maynes,
Kaylee Moore and Gracie Robson.
The
Petrolia Oilers were the next opponents for the Roadrunners and in a low
scoring defensive battle, the two clubs tied 1-1. Tizzard scored the lone goal for Cambridge with
assists credited to Moore and Robson.
Cambridge then blanked Woodstock
4-0 in their next match, knocking the hosts out of their own
tournament. Emily Medizza scored
her first goal of the season for the winners with a hard blast from the
right point that eluded the Woodstock
goaltender. Galvao, Maynes and
Gilmour had the other Cambridge
goals while Shelby Prilisauer, Carlee Diamond, Gallant, Galvao, Gilmour,
Moore and Tizzard were credited with assists. Mallary Bouctsis earned the shutout in
goal for Cambridge
while Alexandra Mior had a strong game on defence for the winners.
The championship
game featured Cambridge against Stratford and this
one was a thriller! Stratford
came out guns a blazing, took the play to a tentative looking Cambridge squad and
jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead.
A between period “pep talk” by the Cambridge coaches saw the
Roadrunners not give up as they battled back and scored 3 unanswered goals
by Tizzard, Galvao and Kelly Melo to deadlock the score after 2 periods of
play.
The
third period saw the two teams exchange many scoring opportunities and it
wasn’t until the mid-way point of the period when Defensemen Alexandra
DeMarco scored on a beautiful end to end rush giving the club a 1 goal
lead. Assisting on the play were
Sarah Rothwell and Reid Hunt. A
pretty passing play from Hunt to Prilisauer sent Tizzard in all alone on a
breakaway to score giving Cambridge
a 2 goal lead. Stratford then scored with 2 minutes left
to cut the margin to 1 setting the stage for a hectic last minute of
play. With their goalie pulled for
an extra attacker and Cambridge frantically trying to hold on, Stratford
managed a last second shot at the buzzer but a blocker save by goalie Emily
Hedge preserved the win and gave Cambridge the victory in a well played,
extremely exciting championship game.

Atom “A” Roadrunners win 2005 Provincial Championship
The Cambridge Roadrunners Atom A team won gold last weekend in the
Provincials. It took 5 hard fought games to make it the Championship game.
In the first game the girls tied Kingston
2-2, that afternoon they beat Aurora
3-1. In the quarter final game against Guelph the girls played very strong and
came out with 3-0 victory. The semi final game against Peterborough was a close one with Cambridge coming out
on top 2-1. The championship game was exciting; the girls played the game
of their short lives with the game winning goal scored with only 43 seconds
left on the clock. The girls held Toronto- Leaside off for the remaining
seconds and took the game 1-0. Kaitlin Kok left the tournament with 3
shutouts, Kayla Horney with 1, the goalies played amazing, both were very
strong in net. Goals were scored by Mackenzie Levesque 3, Kayla Schmitz 2,
Jasmine Lee 1, Erin Baumung 1, Hanna Moher 1, Melissa Westwood 1 and Brooke
North 1. Contributing forwards with strong plays were Jennifer Renton, Amy
Barnard, Lauren Hummel and Britney Pettitt. The defensive play of Mackenzie
Levesque, Kayla Carnegie, Nicole Mercer, Jasmine Lee, Jenn Rapp and Maizie
Laking all weekend made it difficult for the other teams to even reach the
net. The girls would not have made it this far without the coaching talents
of Terry Barnard( head coach), Mike North, Mike Moher and help from Kevin
Darcy. Thank you to our sponsor Brookfield Golf Course for a great year.
